The Marvel of Angkor Wat
Huge, gigantic, awesome,amazing... These are some of exclamations we heard as we approached the world's largest religious monument. But, what we saw was even more than that. Spread in more than four hundred acres of land and having a periphery of over fifteen kilometers what stood in front of us was a marvel of marvels! A beauty in stones, an art in monoliths and a faith in inanimate that transforms an insentient into sentient being. That is Angkor Wat! Its a sample of outstanding architecture.
Built by the Khmer Hindu king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire. The temple was dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu with its original name as Vrah Viṣṇuloka after the presiding deity. The temple complex was constructed on the suggestion of Divākarapaṇḍita and all its original religious motifs were derived from Hindu faith. It was built as the king's state temple in the capital city. With passage of time it accommodated Buddhist faith, a sister of Hindu faith. Later on Jayavarman VII of the same dynasty gradually tried to convert it into Buddhist temple replacing some of the sculptures by Buddhist art. But, as per saying in Hindu scriptures, once a temple always a temple, worshiping of Vishnu is practiced on date by devotees regularly.
